Founders and natives of Texas, Steve and Lisha Finley, went into the business of making sunburn relief products in 1980. Operating a distributing company at the time, they saw that the major sunburn relief product manufacturers were focusing on price points more than on product quality. They recognized a market for better quality products, especially where sun and skin care were concerned.

In 1980 Coppertone's Solarcaine, which was the main product on the market for sunburn relief, was alcohol based and drying on the skin. Hiring a formulator and a lab the Finley's introduced aloe to the beaches and mass markets in 1981― a time when aloe was available only through mail order and health food stores.

As they worked the beaches, they learned that SPF #15, the highest available on the market, wasn't strong enough to protect lighter skinned people, or to protect any color of skin for many hours of sun exposure. Once again, working with a formulator and lab, they created the nation's first SPF #'s above 15, and led the industry for years in SPF development.

Selling their formulations to major drug companies in the mid 1980's the company was elected #94 in the top 500 privately held companies in America.

The company continued to pioneer, and in 1990 introduced the first ever, water-based / waterproof sunblock, called Saurus. In 1991, they hired a highly respected US testing facility to create what has become the industry's standard for 8 hour waterproof testing. All products went through this test at 100%, meaning after 8 hours the product rated the same SPF as it had at the start of the test.
